After a weekend of cool temperatures and lots of rain, a good homemade pizza was called for.
There are three secrets to a having a great pizza dinner. First you must start with a thin crust. Second, place sliced provolone cheese down before moving on to other toppings. The third requirement is a good bottle of wine worthy of such a pie.
We paired our pizza with a bottle of Diva (2010, Cochise County, AZ, 12.9% ABV) from Sam Pillsbury at Pillsbury Wine Company. Sam’s birthday was this past week and this was also a chance to lift up a glass of one of his best. The 2010 Diva is 92% Syrah and 8% Petite Sirah and Sam made 300 cases. The mix of grapes for Diva changes each year, with 2011 seeing the addition of Mourvedre. The 2010 Diva has pronounced blackberry flavors with moderate tannins. All in all, an excellent bottle of wine.
